Newhaven will be taken by storm in 2011 by two large scale, spectacular outdoor events!

‘Newhaven Cormorant!’ & ‘La Photo Communale II ’

Brighton based arts charity, Zap Art, is working with renowned French street arts company, Generik Vapeur, to produce two exciting outdoor arts events in Newhaven town centre and harbour - ‘La Photo Communale II ’ & ‘Newhaven Cormorant!’. The proposed dates and times for the shows are Saturday 12th March (midday) and Saturday 16th July (evening).

Generik Vapeur will be visiting Newhaven Town Centre on Saturday 12th March with the UK premier of ‘La Photo Communale II ‘. A larger than life mobile camera will rove around the streets of Newhaven immortalising the character of the town and the many faces of it’s people through a giant photographic lens. The pictures taken will then be presented as a backdrop to the ‘Newhaven Cormorant!’ event on 16th July. ‘Newhaven Cormorant!’ is a brand new show specially commissioned for Newhaven. It will be a site specific, spectacle performance with a musical procession and breathtaking aerial feats. The harbour will be transformed with an explosion of sights, sounds, colour, lights, pyrotechnics and projections!.

The project will involve working with local artists, community groups and educational organisations and will be running a programme of free activities and workshops in March.

This project is the result of ongoing work including a scoping document and partnership meetings that have been underway over the past year. There is a partnership of ZEPA* , Newhaven Town Council, Lewes district council, East Sussex County Council, the Arts Council, and Zap Art to develop and support this work. There is also support from the Newhaven Strategic Network, Newhaven Fort and the Newhaven Port Authority. The project is also being sponsored by the ferry company LD Lines.

The project would like to extend special thanks to: The Hillcrest Community Centre, Brighton Festival, Newhaven Marina, West Register Property, RBS, Sussex Police, Inroads Productions, Christian Funnell (Cormorant scultpture artist), Newhaven Community Development Association,.
