Emerge is organised by the University of Winchester, and has a unique partnership between a Festival (Hat Fair), a Creation Centre (The Point, Eastleigh) and also a theatre company (Wet Picnic). The event’s goal is to enhance the artistic and professional development of the Artists offering them programming, mentoring and residency opportunities after the festival each year.
The Emerge Festival started on 20th May at the Point, Eastleigh, with a training day for the artists. Several professionals have taken part in it, as Kate Hazel, the Hat Fair artistic director, Matt Feerick, Wet Picnic Artistic director, and Bruno de Beaufort, Creative Producer of Luc Amoros.
On 21st and 22nd June, the 10 companies have been performing in both Winchester and Eastleigh. Among them was present the Hocus Pocus company, that had been rehearsing in March 2011 at the Atelier 231 in Sotteville-lès-Rouen for their show Sideshow of Curiosities. The street art students from the University of Winchester also performed some walkabouts shows at the event. Two Emerge companies, Beni The Buzzard and Bright Shadow, will be performing at Hat Fair at the beginning of July as part of the professional development package offered to participants of the festival.
The Emerge organiser, Faye Pain, hope to make it a European Festival, welcoming emerging artists from all over the continent.
