Mardi Gras goes by different names across the globe as people celebrate the changing of the seasons- weather its Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, Pancake day or Užgavenes.

Great Yarmouth will celebrate the day in its own unique style by staging King Street Mardi Gras on Tuesday 8 March when Seachange Arts will host a rolling programme of entertainment which will run from 4-6pm with many activities taking place on the street and inside a specially erected covered area.

The theme this year will draw heavily on the notion of spring versus winter – these will be represented throughout the event in the form of ‘Fatso’ and ‘Hempen’ – two characters from Lithuanian culture who do battle to signify the changing of the seasons. “We introduced Fatso and Hempen at last year’s event,” explained SeaChange’s Chief Executive, Joe Mackintosh, “This year, we’re developing their role and they will be central to the afternoon’s activities.”

The roles of Fatso and Hempen will be filled by performers from Zepa associated company Générik Vapeur who will be specifically choreographing the epic finale of Mardi Gras- a fight scene between the representatives of the two seasons.

We see a welcome return for our zany pancake challenge, Total Crepe, in which performers from Markmark Productions put participants through their paces with a special pancake race which blends the familiar frying pans and tossing of pancakes with a performance element.

The event also features live music from Swingball, workshop activities inside our Wacky Wardrobes, fire sculptures and a window dressing competition.
